WHITEFORD VFC IMPROVES ISO RATING

Friday, August 20, 2010
-
The Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company is proud to announce our Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating has improved from a Class 7/9 to Class 5/9. The Whiteford VFC has been working on this project for the pass four (4) years.

The Class 5 number represents the property fire protection classification. The Class 9 number represents to water supply system classification.

ISO helps establish appropriate fire insurance premiums for residential and commercial properties, insurance companies need reliable, up-to-date information about community's fire-protection services. ISO provides that information through the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program. ISO collects information on the municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each of those communities, ISO analyzes the relevant data using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. They assign a Public Protection Classification 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria.

ISO has extensive information on more than 44,000 fire-response jurisdictions.

The last rating in the Whiteford, Cardiff, Pylesville, and portion of Street areas was completed in 1994. Since then, numerous changes and additions have been made to improve this rating. The company provided over 1000 documents that included responses, manpower, training, station, apparatus, Standard Operating Guidelines, pre-plans, dry-hydrant system, and maintenance records for ISO review.

The great news is that this rating benefits both home & business owners with the opportunity of gaining insurance savings that will go into effect by 2011. We encourage property owners to contact their insurance companies to see if they qualify for this savings. Most insurance companies use ISO ratings, however, a very small amount do not.

The second phase will conduct the Tanker Shuttle grading to lower our 9 rating by the end of the year. Since there is no public water supply system, we reply on Tankers to transport large volume of water to the scene from one of the twelve (12) reliable water supply locations. Our efforts have enable us to install dry-hydrant materials at these strategical locations. These material consist of large diameter plastic pipe with fire dept. fittings that provide a quick means in obtaining water. Five of these location have been credited by ISO. The final grading will benefit property owners with additional insurance savings.

The Whiteford VFC Officers and Members are proud to have received this important recognition. The company continues to strive in maintaining the highest emergency services to the communities we serve.
